New Hampshire Auto Insurance: What You Must Know in 2025
New Hampshire auto insurance is unique compared to other U.S.
By Sophia Chen
New Hampshire auto insurance is unique compared to other U.S. states because it does not legally require most drivers to carry car insurance. However, that does not mean you should hit the road uninsured. In fact, understanding how New Hampshire auto insurance works is crucial if you want to protect yourself financially, avoid penalties, and ensure peace of mind on the road.
Although the Granite State is the only one in the country that does not require mandatory liability coverage for all drivers, it has specific financial responsibility laws that make insurance coverage highly advisable. Moreover, if you cause an accident, the costs can quickly escalate, leaving you vulnerable to lawsuits or severe out-of-pocket expenses.
In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about New Hampshire auto insurance in 2025, including state laws, average rates, coverage types, discounts, and tips to help you choose the best policy for your needs.

Overview of New Hampshire Auto Insurance Laws
Unlike most states, New Hampshire auto insurance laws do not impose a blanket requirement for drivers to carry liability coverage. However, there are important caveats:
-
If you are at fault in an accident and don’t have insurance, you will be held financially responsible for bodily injuries and property damage.
-
If you have been convicted of certain offenses (like DUI or reckless driving), the state may require you to file an SR-22 and carry proof of insurance.
Key requirements if you choose to purchase insurance:
Even though insurance isn’t mandatory, if you do buy a policy, it must meet the following minimums:
-
Bodily Injury Liability: $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
-
Property Damage Liability: $25,000 per accident
-
Medical Payments (MedPay): $1,000 minimum
-
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage: Same as liability limits
Why Buy Auto Insurance in New Hampshire?
While you’re not forced to buy coverage, purchasing New Hampshire auto insurance is strongly recommended for several important reasons.
Key reasons to get insured:
-
Protection from lawsuits: You’re legally responsible for damages if you cause a crash.
-

-
Medical bills: Without MedPay or other insurance, you may face huge medical expenses.
-

-

So, although it’s technically optional for some, New Hampshire auto insurance is a practical necessity in real-world scenarios.
