After Open Enrollment for a 2022 Marketplace health insurance plan has ended, you can get Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) health insurance. Suppose you are eligible and qualify for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). In that case, you can get health insurance at any time of year and start receiving benefits right away.

 

What is the difference between Medicaid and CHIP?

  • Medicaid covers some low-income individuals, families, children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with disabilities.
  • Some states have expanded Medicaid to cover everyone earning less than a certain amount.
  • The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is funded by the government and provides low-cost health insurance to children whose families earn more than an average to qualify for Medicaid. In some areas, CHIP also covers parents and pregnant women.
